ABOUT RYAN NELSON
“I enjoy competition of any kind. I love adrenaline. I have been skydiving, as well as wing walking…”
I was born and raised in Kitsap County, a military community situated an hour west of Seattle. I cherish our home for its proximity to all immediate family members and its scenic views of mountains and water bodies, all without the congestion of Seattle traffic.
My wife, Kali, and I were married in 2018, and we welcomed our daughter, Kinsley, in 2021. I thrive on competition and the rush of adrenaline; my adventures have included skydiving and wing-walking—performing stunts on the wing of a propeller plane, which was exhilarating.
My competitive nature extends to strategic board and card games, which enhance my ability to think tactically about our business ventures. Growing up, I played as a goalie for a local roller hockey team—an unconventional sport that taught me invaluable lessons. From this vantage point, I could oversee the entire game, assess our offensive gaps, and observe the opponent’s reactions.
This perspective instilled in me the principles of teamwork and leadership. Unlike other positions, a goalie cannot take breaks or give up; this role taught me resilience and accountability. My work ethic was honed during my childhood; my grandparents supported my hockey pursuits, and in return, I worked on their land almost every weekend to reciprocate their generosity.
These lessons have seamlessly transferred to my business career, which began in earnest in 2017. Embracing the mantra, “I’m young enough to fail,” I persevered through numerous setbacks. I established Cornerstone Cleaning in July 2017, and by 2018, we were operating full-time. By 2019, we began to expand our team.
In April 2021, we acquired a local business, transforming our workforce from three to twenty-one employees and exceeding one million dollars in annual revenue. In June of the same year, I co-founded Kitsap Painting with a close friend. Despite the often-touted risks of partnerships, our collaboration has been fruitful and fulfilling.
My philosophy of ‘believe or leave’ has propelled me through two marathons without prior training and has sustained me during challenging times, fostering significant achievements within our team.
Inspired by Hernán Cortés, I have adopted a no-retreat approach to life’s challenges. By “burning the boats,” I have eliminated any possibility of retreat, ensuring a steadfast commitment to learning, growing, and adapting regardless of the obstacles I encounter.
Now, I extend this decision to you. For yourself, your family, your career, your goals, and your dreams: will you choose to believe, or will you choose to leave?
